About the programme

We are a Kenyan nonprofit working to raise the floor of learning for children at the bottom of the pyramid — the poorest, most rural, and most marginalized learners in Kenya's 47 counties.

  • Our goal is to keep children at the bottom of the pyramid in school and learning, by addressing the compounding barriers of poverty, disability, gender discrimination, and geographic isolation.
  • To achieve this goal, we deliver direct programmes in schools and communities, conduct learning assessments, advocate for equitable policy, and build the capacity of teachers and local institutions.
  • Our advocacy targets the specific practices and policies that push children out of school — female genital mutilation, child marriage, period shame, and the exclusion of children with disabilities.
  • Our work is deeply rooted in local solutions and prioritizes the rights and involvement of girls, children with disabilities, nomadic and pastoralist communities, and children in urban informal settlements.
  • Our network spans Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands and urban informal settlements, working in partnership with county governments, schools, faith institutions, and development partners.

The State of Kenyan Children:
A Crisis Unfolding

For more than three decades, Kenya has been bound by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child — a promise to protect the dignity, safety, and future of every child within its borders. Yet today, as we mark over 35 years since that historic commitment, the reality facing millions of Kenyan children tells a story of promise unfulfilled.
